Zurita’s oil paintings and works on paper originate from an investigation of the history of slavery and subjugation of black womanhood, as well as how these histories seep into and are embedded into the very bodies of black women. By referencing historical paintings such as Christiaen van Couwenbergh’s Three Young White Men and a Black Woman, the artist calls attention to the legacy of violence enacted on these women and their descendants. By incorporating historical figures and imagined scenes, the artist seeks to provoke the viewer to question what histories or narratives have been forgotten, and what impact they may have present day.
